As you may know, Egypt is a desert so it can get quite hot therefore, you’ll certainly want to plan your vacation around the weather.

October to April are probably the best months to visit!

However, if you only want to see the temples, then winter is the best option for you. December to February has the best weather, although you can expect more crowds and higher prices overall.

On the shoulder season, October to November or March to April, when the weather is warm to hot, is perfect for water activities.

Budget for Egypt

The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian Pound (EGP).

In Egypt, you will see that all chic clubs, bars, restaurants or shops, and hotels will accept debit and credit cards. However, it’s always a good idea to ask if cards are accepted before ordering or purchasing anything.

If you’re looking to withdraw some cash during your visit, you can find ATMs at the hotel or throughout big cities like Cairo and Alexandria. They are less common in rural areas.

Egypt is the place to enjoy amazing hotels which might normally be out of your budget.

Check out Booking.com to compare prices for hotels.

Take with you enough cash as many sites ask you to pay extra in order to be able to take photos.

Book your flight at least one month prior to your trip and if you have destinations on your Egypt itinerary beyond Cairo (which you definitely should!), make sure to have all your tickets prearranged.

Even though it will be blistering hot, the budget-seekers should check the summer deals.

Getting Around in Egypt

There are several ways to get around Egypt. You can drive, take a train, or fly. While the trains are cheap, they involve long rides and typically have extensive delays.

While there are budget-friendly public transportation options, Cairo isn’t really the place. Plan ahead and coordinate with your hotel for a shuttle or car-service.

The main international airports you’ll fly into in Egypt are the Cairo International Airport and  Hurghada International Airport.

Great news! there is Uber in Cairo Egypt, and it’s really cheap!

It’s possible to rent a car and travel around Egypt independently. An international driving license is recommended. Check out these deals for car rental.

Safety in Egypt

This may be your first question. I felt 100% safe during the entire trip. Everything worked out even better than I expected.

Try to avoid looking lost, following directions on your phone and not seeing the world around you. As you may imagine, there are people all over the world looking to take advantage of people like that. Always use your common sense and ask your hotel for safety tips in the area.

Also is really helpful to check the State Department’s warnings before traveling.

My best advice is to make sure you take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover you while you’re away. This is mainly because of the risk you are exposed to when traveling to a new country, whether might be illness, injury, or cancellation. Check out de greatest the options given by SafetyWing. You definitely want a stress-free vacation.

Egypt in October! What to Wear?

Egypt is a Muslim country and fairly conservative so you’re going to want to cover up a bit.

Outside of your hotel, you’ll likely feel most comfortable covering your shoulders and knees.

For day trips I’d recommend a lightweight cotton dress or a long skirt with a shirt and mandatory a wide-brimmed sunhat for shade.

Sneakers are always my favorite, given that you’ll be doing a lot of walking and there is so much sand and uneven terrain. Although, sandals can work just fine, at least in my case.

Take with you a scarf, as the weather is chilly in the mornings and evenings, while will also protect you on a hot sunny day. No trip to Egypt without sunscreen and sunglasses, the sun is blazing!

My Egyptian outfit consisted of midi or maxi dresses that were short-sleeved or sleeveless and loose-fitting pants made of breathable fabrics. Was definitely a perfect choice for the month of October!

For better comfort definitely wear light, loose clothes, and cotton if possible.

As always, the best thing to keep in mind for any travel is to pack light and only bring the necessities. Trust me, you don’t wanna carry a huge suitcase all around Egypt.

Know Before You Go to Egypt

Culture: As I’ve said, dress a bit more conservatively than you normally do to respect the culture. Also, as the heat is intense, it is better to have your skin covered anyway!

You ARE, expected to cover up!

Avoid expensive or flashy designer bags, accessories, or jewelry.

If possible, avoid traveling to Egypt during the Holly month of Ramadan.

Religion: Predominately Islamic (Muslim) which means you’ll see many women wearing hijabs (head coverings) however some don’t! Also, you’ll hear the “call to prayer” 5 times per day, which is actually quite lovely, and then you’ll see men praying, sometimes right on the floor wherever they are.

Language: English is not widely known as a second language, but most guides, hotel staffs, and most market vendors speak English.

Food: Sample the culinary secrets, experience the street food culture, and discover what the locals like to eat.

SIM Cards are super easy and cheap. Get a SIM Card at the airport and you will have enough internet for all your vacation.

Tipping…be prepared for harassment, although is fully optional!

Always bargain. This is part of the culture. Very often the vendors start at a higher price knowing that you are a tourist and hoping that you will pay.

Until now, Egypt is the most aggressive experience I have had with hustlers. On every site you visit there are people selling things and they will follow you even when you say no.

Carry LOTs of water!

Drinks: Any big hotel will serve alcohol, however, if is not part of your all-inclusive package they charge a lot for it.

Visa: Is required for entry into Egypt and can be acquired at the airport upon arrival, but it’s not as simple as just waiting in line at the passport desk. Be sure to carry enough cash to cover your visa fee. If you want to bypass the visa crowed use the online service Egypt e-visa prior to your arrival in the country.

For your airport pick-up, arrange a car in advance through your hotel and tack on the meet and assist. The ease and peace of mind it will provide will be well worth it.

Travel in the early mornings or late afternoons. It is much cooler to visit sites then

Always carry wet wipes and hand sanitizer.

Do not expect any photo to be free. In fact, a photo can be pricey. I recommend you ask a guide or tourist to take your photo.

The traffic in Cairo is honestly out of control. I’ve been to many hectic places, but Cairo was really a lot.

Plugs: In Egypt, the power plugs are type C and F. The standard voltage is 220 V, and the standard frequency is 50 Hz. I recommend taking with you a universal adapter and also using a converter for hairdryers and hot tools.

If you are all about getting the perfect shot of the pyramids, I recommend going there in the early morning or sunset for the best views.

I’d highly advise hiring a guide while in Egypt as having someone helping you with the planning, transportation, and sightseeing is really great.

Forget your drone home! Otherwise, you must obtain permission from Egypt’s Civil Aviation Authority to take it with you.
